The poor "scholarship boy"

Grice was NOT poor, but you know the Oxonian types (Lord Douglas -- Lord Elderly, Lord Borrowmore, Lord Sickert and Lord Camp).

So, when he arrived straight from Clifton (not Harrow or Eton) he was referred to by Ayer and Berlin and Hart as 'a midlands scholarship boy'.

In those days, there were no scholarship 'girls', so 'boy' was NOT sexist!

This from the wiki on Feyerabend that J suggested I should read:

"In 1951, Feyerabend was granted a
British Council scholarship to study
under Wittgenstein. However, Wittgenstein
died before Feyerabend moved to England. Feyerabend
then chose Popper as his supervisor instead."

Once a scholarship boy, ALLways a scholarship boy! I would have rather re-imbursed!
